u p cap acito r will contin ue to supply vdd before energy can be deli v ered f r om the auxiliary wi nd i ng of th e main tran sform e r. vdd must not drop b e lo w 1 2 .4 v durin g t h is s t ar t- u p pr oc e s s . t h is u v lo h y s t ere s i s w i n dow ens ure s that t he hol d-u p ca p acito r ca n adequ ately supply vdd du ri n g start - up. gate output / soft driving the h6842 output stage is a fast totem pole gate driver . cross-conduction has been avoided to minimize heat dissipation, increase efficiency, and enhance reliability. the output driver is clamped by an internal 18v zener diode in order to protect the power mosfet transistors from any harmful over-voltage gate signals. a soft driving waveform is implemented to minimize emi. slope compensation the se nsed voltage acro ss the cu rrent sen s e re si sto r is u s e d for pea k-cu rre nt-m ode co ntrol and cy cle - by -c y c l e cu rrent lim itin g. the b u ilt-in sl ope comp e n s atio n fun c tio n i m prove s p o we r su pply stability and p r event s p ea k -cu r re nt - mo de co ntrol from ca usi ng sub - h arm oni c oscillation s. within eve r y swit ch ing cycl e, the h6 842 cont roll e r pro d uces a p o sitively slop ed, synch r o n ized ramp sign al constant output power limit whe n the sense voltage a c ro ss the se nse r es i s t o r r s reache s th e threshol d vo l t age, the output gate d r ive w ill be tur n ed off follow ing a s m all pr opagation delay t pd . this propagation del ay will result in an addition al cu rre nt prop o r tio nal to t pd *v in /l p . the pro p a g a tio n d e lay is ne a r ly co n s tant re g a rdle ss of th e input line v o ltage v in . high er i nput l i ne voltage s will re su lt in large r a d dit i onal cu rre n ts. thu s , u nder hi gh inp u t -lin e voltage s the out put power li mit will be hi gher than under lo w input-line voltage s. the output power limit variation can be significant ov er a wide range of ac input voltages. to compensate for this, the th re shold volta g e is adju s ted by the cu rrent i in . since the pin vin is con n e c te d to the re ctified i n put line voltage through the start- up resistor, a higher line voltage will result in a higher current i in through the pin vin. the thre sh ol d voltage de cre ases if th e cu rrent i in increa se s. a small thre sh o l d voltage will force the out put gat e drive to terminate e a r lie r, thu s re du cin g total pwm turn-o n time, and m a kin g the out put po we r eq ual to to that of the low line input. this proprietary internal compensation feature ensures a constant output power limit over a wide range of ac input voltages (90vac to 264vac) vdd over-voltage protection vdd ove r-v ol tage prote c t i on ha s be en built in to prevent dam a ge d ue to ove r voltage con d ition s . whe n the v o ltage v dd excee d s the internal threshold due to abnormal condition s , pwm out put wi ll be turned off. over-voltage con d ition s are usu a lly cau s e d by op en fee dba ck lo op s. limited power control the fb voltage will i n crea se every time the output of the po wer sup ply is sh orted or over-load ed. if the fb voltage rem ai n s hig he r tha n a built-in thresh old fo r lo n ger tha n t lps , pwm output will then be turned off. as pwm output is turned off, the supply voltage vdd will also begin decreasi ng. when vdd goes bel ow the turn-off threshold (eg, 12.4v) the c ontroll er will be totally shut down. vdd will be charged up to t he t u rn-on thresh ol d voltage of 16. 5v thro ug h the sta r t-up re si sto r until pwm output is re starte d. thi s protectio n feature will co ntin ue to be activated as long as the over-loading condition persi sts. this will prevent the power supply from overheating due to over loading conditions thermal protection an external ntc the r mi sto r can be con n ected f r o m th e rt pi n to grou nd. a fixed cu rre n t i rt i s s o u r c ed from the rt pin. beca u s e the imp e d a n ce of the ntc will de cre a se at high te mpe r ature s , whe n the voltage of the rt pin drops below 1.065v, pwm output will be disabled. the rt pin output current is related to the pwm frequency programming resistor r i. noise immunity noise from the current sense or the control signal may cause significant pulse width jitter, particularly in continuous-conduction mode. slope compensation helps alleviate this problem. good placement and layout practices should be followed. the designer should avoiding long pcb traces and component leads. compensation and filter components should be located near the h6842. finally, increasing the power -mos gate resistance is advised.
